General Practitioners Encouraged To Know Herbal Medicines

Indonesian Doctors Association with the Ministry of Health is preparing a curriculum for applied education and training in the introduction of herbal medicine for general practitioners in Indonesia. Secretary General of the Executive Board of IDI Slamet Budiarto said curriculum has been done for six months.

"The curriculum will be applied to training for physicians who already practice, especially general practitioners," said Slamet after speaking in Progress Seminar Uses Herbs and Health Affairs held in Padang IDI and herbal medicine manufacturers Sido Appears in Padang on Saturday (15/5 ).

Slamet said the curriculum of herbal medicines is expected to be one step to reduce Indonesia's dependence on imported drugs. On the other hand, research efforts to gain scientific support for the herb to be used in medical treatment.

According to Slamet, during this new herbal medicines used in the promotion, not yet at the level of curative (treatment).

Professor of Diponegoro University, Semarang, Prof. Dr. Edi Dharmana added that the biggest obstacle for producing and introducing herbal medicine is the relative lack of research budget. Research is important for clinical trials of herbal medicine before becoming fitofarmaka.

"We hope that the doctors want to use herbal medicine. The problem is, not all medicines (herbs) examined the content of active ingredient. So, there is no clinical evidence that doctors hesitate, "said Edi who is also researcher and herbal medications that immunologists.

Edi said that currently there were only five in Indonesia Indonesian herbal medicine have passed clinical trials to be fitofarmaka, namely Stimuno (immune enhancer), Tensigard Agromed (used to treat high blood pressure), X-Gra (enhancing male sexual arousal), Rheumaneer (pain-reducing), and Nodiar (antidiarrheal).

However, after passing clinical trials, herbal medicine from natural materials were relatively expensive and tend to be similar to imported drugs. For example Tensigard Agromed made of celery (Apium graviolens L) and plant cat's whiskers (Orthosiphon stamineus Bent).

In response, Slamet said, the most important use of herbal medicine and use the first of Indonesia's biodiversity.
