Good for stomach ulcers and digestion, also a good laxative. In lozenges for sore throats. Has some mild anti-inflammatory and anti-spasmodic effects. The root of the plant produces a mild estrogenic effect. It can cause fluid and salt retention. Can cause high blood pressure in some people especially when taken in high amounts, but generally safe. Should be avoided by people with high blood pressure, heart problems, kidney problems and pregnant women who are known to have swelling.
