The three big East African countries - Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda, are among some of the most popular spots for tourists. Many choose to visit these countries for a safari trip or simple to experience life in Africa in a relatively more stable country. However, traveling in East Africa can be difficult and maybe even dangerous if the visitors go unprepared.
1. Before you depart, make sure you have a color copy of your passport with you. If you lose your passport in East Africa, that copy will help you immensely in speeding up the process of receiving a new one.
2. Ask your doctor for a prescription of malaria pills and take them according to instructions. You will need to take the pills for one more week after you leave the country. Although the anti-malaria pill malarone is more expensive than the traditional doxycycline, it is more effective and has fewer side effects. Take your malaria pill in the morning after you have eaten your breakfast.
3. You will need to attach a record of yellow fever shot to your passport in order to receive an Ugandan visitor’s visa.
4. Dar es Salaam is one of the most popular cities in Tanzania and it is also among the most prosperous cities in East Africa. However, beware of theft in the city, particularly in crowded areas. Young children are often trained to be thieves. Do not put all your valuable items in one single place.
5. Kenya’s capital, Nairobi is an exciting but dangerous city. It is not uncommon for people to get mugged during broad daylight. Tourists are particularly vulnerable to crimes as they are unfamiliar with the surroundings. Stay alert and do not display any valuable items.
6. Uganda is a very conservative Muslim and Christian country. Female tourists should refrain from wearing skimpy clothing. 6. Spend all the local currency before you leave the country as you will not be able to exchange the shillings back into U.S. dollars, pounds, or Euros.
